美国导演协会（（Directors Guild of America-DGA）在迎来创立八十周年之际，票选推出八十年来“最伟大的80部导演作品”榜单。弗朗西斯·福特·科波拉导演的《教父》一举夺魁，成为美国导演协会心中最佳。《教父2》与《现代启示录》同样高居前十，这使得科波拉成为唯一有多部作品入选榜单前十位的导演。
史蒂文·斯皮尔伯格与斯坦利·库布里克各有5部导演作品当选，阿尔弗雷德·希区柯克有4部作品入选紧随其后。亚洲导演中，仅有黑泽明一人有作品入围，《七武士》与《罗生门》分列26与79位。凯瑟琳·毕格罗则凭借《拆弹部队》成为唯一有作品入选的女性导演。
这张榜单由美国导演协会的2189位成员（占会员总数的13.7%）参与投票，所有1936年（即导演协会成立年份）以后的电影作品均被纳入备选，其中也包括非协会会员的导演作品。完整榜单如下：
